Time to Focus

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 6, 2013, 8:13 PM

The past few days I've had difficulty focusing. I think it's because for 3 solid weeks I had been pushing myself to learn, analyze and present information at very high rates, along with producing results for my experiments out of necessity at high rates, and I've lacked the time to think about why. When there is a lot of stress on you, compared to what you're used to, it can wear you down if you lack the conviction to be strengthened by it. I don't lack the conviction, but I've been too preoccupied in jumping between different trains of thought to remember that. I have been working hard, but then spending the little free time I had engaged in fiction, or stressing myself out about the things I still needed to do. Clearly, this is unhealthy, so I'm putting an end to that. I'll get all my work done, but I'll approach it with a more relaxed attitude.

We are all, first and foremost, prisoners of our own minds. We choose to view every experience in a certain way. This isn't always a conscious choice, but it's a choice we make nonetheless, and we do have power over it. Any amount of joy or anxiety or hate or bliss that we feel over any experience is entirely determined by our own outlook on that experience. We have the power to make our own lives heaven or hell, almost independently of the circumstances we are in. If we choose to enjoy things, if we choose not to be afraid of failure, if we choose to accept whatever happens with a smile, then we have chosen to help ourselves, rather than hurting ourselves.

Let's get rid of the prison analogy.

If the mind is the ship, then each of us is the captain of our own ship. We can plot the course we wish to take, and while we can't control which way the wind blows, we can decide whether we want to travel through storms and high seas, or if we want to glide across a calm expanse of water instead. Moreover, we can decide whether we enjoy or fear those high seas, and whether the calm expanses are delightful, or maddeningly boring.

My mother told me something like this when I was a lot younger, but I didn't understand it then. I argued against the idea at the time, but perhaps this is an idea that you have to experience for yourself in order to believe it. I understand it better now then I did even until very recently. There is no universal answer about what the right way to think or do things is. We all must make our own choices. I choose to live my life in a way that brings me joy and satisfaction, and when I err from that path, I write a journal about philosophy so that I can get back on it. ^_^

There is nothing in life that we "have to" do. There are things in life that we choose to do for complicated reasons, but not because we don't have a choice. Always remember that.

If you're reading this, I hope that it makes your day a little bit better.

As a 23-year old Ph.D. student, there are many things in this world that I have yet to learn. I tend to take tasks very seriously, and the creation of art is important to me.

I began making fractal art back in 2006, shortly after I joined DA. Since that time, I have competed in a number of fractal contests and won several. My techniques vary significantly from some that you see among other fractal artists. I have remained on the outskirts of the community, which has in some ways stunted my growth as an artist, but simultaneously challenged me to develop my own techniques and gain a better understanding of the underlying mathematical principals that govern fractals. However, I have learned that it doesn't matter how much time you spend on techniques if you don't put your soul into the art you're making. It doesn't matter what median it is, without passion all you get is a hollow image, devoid of feeling.

While most of my art consists of fractals, I love to write, and I value my prose and poetry just as highly as my best fractals.

I am always eager to help people out, so if you have any questions about how I make my art, or if you would like me to make something for you, feel free to ask. B-)

Art

Art is the ultimate expression of the mind and soul. Within all of us lies the omnipresent potential to find peace, agony, joy and ire in all walks of life. How we choose to percieve situations is what defines us as individuals, and how we react is the ultimate test of our character.

The community on DeviantArt is truly incredible because of the amazing people who devote vast amounts of time energy to make it so. Always remember to be respectful towards others and their art, for a stray callous word against something of extreme individual importance can cause far more torment than intended.

I could try, although I would most certainly fail. ^_^ I'm not that smart, and it would take more computing power than currently exists on the planet to fully understand a person as kind and fun as you.

No, not yet. XD I'm working on getting one, still in my first year. It's kind of fun and exciting though. I get a lab full of chemicals that I can use to make things and solve questions, and I'm paid enough money that I can buy food! Yay for food!
